Nigerian farmers have been advised to reduce their dependence on antibiotics in livestock production to protect animal health and the environment.
Animal nutritionist Habeeb Tajudeen made the call in a statement on Thursday, stressing the need to adopt sustainable practices that address food security while tackling the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
“We are living in an era of population growth, climate change, and food insecurity,” Tajudeen said. “Science gives us the tools to tackle these issues, and my exploration is part of that global solution.”
He identified alternatives such as black soldier fly meal and oil, which can replace resource-intensive ingredients like soybean and tallow. According to him, converting organic waste into high-value feed supports waste management while reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.
Tajudeen also pointed to mineral optimisation using nano-zinc and phytase, which improve bone health and cut harmful farm emissions, as well as multienzyme blends that boost nutrient digestibility and reduce feed costs for non-ruminant animals.
“My goal is to provide practical models that help farmers, feed industries, and policymakers make better decisions for both animals and the planet,” he added.
With more than 35 peer-reviewed publications, Tajudeen has contributed to innovations in livestock feed systems, productivity, and sustainability. He also serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals and mentors young African researchers through platforms such as the African Union Assembly and the Korea-Africa Foundation.
His work, he said, offers Nigerian farmers a roadmap to reduce antibiotic reliance while supporting healthier livestock and a more sustainable food system.
