A 33-year-old Nigerian man, Segun Ogundipe, has been sentenced to five years in prison in the United Kingdom for raping and sexually assaulting a woman in Gloucester.

Ogundipe, who lived on Tuffley Lane, Gloucester, was convicted at Gloucester Crown Court of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and assault by penetration. He denied the offences.

According to Gloucestershire Police, the crimes occurred in 2022 after Ogundipe met the woman at her workplace and later invited her out for a drink. During the evening, he made sexual remarks that made her uncomfortable. He then drove her to his home on the pretext of collecting something, where he assaulted and raped her after she used the bathroom.

Police said that on the drive to Cheltenham afterwards, Ogundipe continued to touch her despite her repeated pleas for him to stop. His car was later stopped by officers on routine patrol, giving the woman an opportunity to leave. Although initially reluctant to speak, she disclosed the assault after an officer noticed her distress.

Ogundipe was arrested and charged. In court, he claimed the woman initiated the sexual contact and consented, but the jury rejected his account.

Judge Lowe acknowledged positive character references but said the seriousness of the offences required a custodial sentence. Ogundipe will also face deportation after serving his term.

In a statement read in court, the victim described the profound emotional toll of the assault, saying it left her questioning her self-worth, forced her to leave her job, and made her fearful of interacting with others. She urged other survivors to come forward, assuring them they would be believed and supported.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jon Furse praised the survivor’s courage and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to holding sexual offenders accountable. He encouraged victims of rape or sexual assault to report such crimes.

The sentencing came just days after another Nigerian man, Elvis Nosakhare, was jailed for six years in the UK for sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s underage daughter.
