Nigerians paid 63% more in road taxes in 2023 — NBS


The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a 63% increase in road tax revenue collected by Nigerian states in 2023, emphasising the growing role of road taxes in state-level revenue generation.

According to the NBS’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) report, total road tax collections rose to N40.14 billion in 2023, up from N24.57 billion in 2022.

Notably, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not record any road tax revenue for the year.

Lagos State emerged as the highest collector, with road tax revenue amounting to N16.74 billion, accounting for 41.7% of the total national figure for 2023.

Ebonyi State recorded the most dramatic increase, with a 3,804.32% surge, jumping from N72.95 million in 2022 to N2.85 billion in 2023.

Rivers State also showed substantial growth, with road tax revenue rising by 270.66% to N830.01 million from N223.93 million.

Sokoto State reported a 41.22% increase in collections, amounting to N194.66 million, while Yobe State’s revenue increased by 30.4% to N81.88 million.

Enugu State reported a 95.12% drop from N1.1 billion in 2022 to N53.47 million in 2023. Katsina State’s road tax revenue fell sharply by 79.34%, down to N29.3 million from N141.81 million.

Niger State also faced a decrease of 53.41%, with collections dropping from N408.83 million to N190.49 million.

Cross River’s road tax revenue fell by 62.54%, from N3.26 billion in 2022 to N1.22 billion in 2023.
