NiMet Predicts Dust Haze, Rainfall Across Nigeria, Warns of Possible Flooding

Date:

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast varying weather conditions, including dust haze and rainfall, across different parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday, urging residents to remain vigilant.

In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted slight dust haze with good visibility over Borno, Zamfara, northern Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina States on Monday. The agency also said isolated thunderstorms with light rain were expected in parts of Taraba and Adamawa States later in the afternoon and evening.

For the central region, NiMet forecast sunny skies with patches of clouds, with possibilities of isolated thunderstorms and light rain over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Kogi States.

According to the agency, cloudy conditions are expected in the southern region on Monday morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Ondo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States later in the day.

On Tuesday, NiMet said northern states would continue to experience slight dust haze with good visibility, while Taraba and Adamawa could record isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall. The central region is expected to have sunny skies with intermittent clouds, with chances of early morning thunderstorms in Benue and moderate rain later in FCT, Nasarawa, and Kogi States.

In the south, the agency predicted cloudy skies in the morning, with moderate rainfall over Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom, intensifying in the afternoon and evening. It warned of possible flooding in parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States, urging local authorities to activate emergency response measures.

For Wednesday, NiMet anticipated sunny skies across the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain likely later in the day, especially over parts of Taraba State. The central region would experience sunny skies with patches of clouds and possible light rain over Kogi and the FCT, while the south would see cloudy morning conditions followed by moderate rains and thunderstorms in Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet cautioned motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and advised residents in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures. It also urged individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exposure due to suspended dust particles in the northern states.

The agency further advised airline operators to obtain updated, airport-specific weather information for flight planning and encouraged the public to stay informed through NiMet’s website and communication platforms.
