NLC Queries Edo Affiliate Leaders Over Secretariat Lockdown

Date:

The national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued queries to five affiliate union presidents over the continued closure of the Edo State chapter’s secretariat.

Those affected include the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), and the National Union of Public Service Reportorial and Secretarial Workers of Nigeria (NUPSRAW).

In letters dated September 2nd, 2025, and signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, and Treasurer Ambali Akeem Olatunji, the national body accused the affiliate chairmen of “treachery and insurrection” for allegedly collaborating to keep the state secretariat under lock, in defiance of directives from the Central Working Committee.

The NLC also demanded that the union presidents begin immediate disciplinary proceedings against the state chairmen, including their suspension from union activities pending investigation. It also ordered the return of all keys to the state secretariat to the recognized State Administrative Committee.

Those queried include NUT Chairman Bernard Ajobiewe, MHWUN Chairman Ogbeide Osagie, NUPSRAW Chairman Kingsley Ireotoi, NCSU Chairman Godwin Oisamaiye, and AUPCTRE Chairman Bernard Joman Egwakhide, who also leads a faction of the NLC in Edo.
