NRC Alleges Oyo State Destroyed Railway Assets In Ibadan

Date:

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused the Oyo State government of causing significant damage to its railway assets in Ibadan, valued at millions of Naira.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the NRC said the incident occurred on Monday, 2 February 2026, along the Mile One-Ten axis in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.

The Corporation alleged that the Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda, led a group comprising hoodlums, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of Amotekun to vandalize railway property.

“The Council Chairman claimed to be working on the instructions of the state Governor,” the NRC statement added, describing the act as a serious violation of federally protected railway assets.

Assets reportedly damaged or removed included rails, sleepers, signal poles, fences, and billboards owned by NRC and its tenants along the railway corridor.

The NRC emphasized that the affected area falls within a legally protected railway right-of-way, and noted that attempts by the NRC Police Command to intervene were met with resistance, forcing officers to withdraw.

Callistus Unyimadu, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, said the Corporation is documenting the incident comprehensively and assessing the extent of the damage.

The NRC warned that it would take appropriate security, administrative, and legal measures to safeguard its assets and prevent future unauthorized use of railway corridors across the country.

Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to maintaining law and order while protecting federal railway property.
