Ogunmola Discusses Pressure of Beauty in Nollywood

Date:

Bolaji Ogunmola has revealed that she faced stereotyping and typecasting in the early stages of her Nollywood career because of her appearance. Speaking in an interview with content creator Joseph Onaolapo, the actress said producers often limited her to certain roles due to her dark complexion and curvy figure.

According to Ogunmola, there was a period in Nollywood when light-skinned actresses were more favoured, making it difficult for her to access diverse acting opportunities. She said she was repeatedly pushed toward “side chick” roles instead of being considered for broader characters.

The actress described her journey in the movie industry as challenging but rewarding, noting that she remained persistent despite setbacks. Ogunmola, who once participated in the reality show Next Movie Star without making the final house, said consistency helped her grow in the industry.

Beyond acting, Ogunmola said she ventured into business early because she never wanted a conventional 9-to-5 career. She explained that she has always been business-minded and believed it was important to build financial stability outside entertainment.

She also advised young creatives to focus on investment and long-term financial security rather than depending solely on fame. Ogunmola credited filmmaker Biodun Stephen for contributing significantly to her development in movie production, saying learning from experienced professionals shaped her career and mindset.
