PAACA Calls for Robust Voter Education Ahead of 2027 Elections

Date:

The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has urged stakeholders to intensify voter education campaigns to combat misinformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Speaking at an event in Kwara State, PAACA’s Executive Director, Ezenwa Nwagwu, expressed concern over what he described as the widespread lack of understanding among Nigerians about the legal framework guiding elections. He warned that this knowledge gap fuels misinformation and undermines public confidence in the process.

“Lack of understanding of the legal regime with which elections are conducted has been responsible for some of the falsehood and misinformation around electoral processes,” Nwagwu said. “It has been humbling to see the level of ignorance, and we are happy to use this platform to educate stakeholders and bridge that gap.”

He added that PAACA will continue to engage citizens through town halls and other platforms to strengthen public awareness and deepen democratic participation.

Also speaking, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kwara State, Dr. Hale Gabriel Longpet, described the initiative as timely.

“Together, we can work towards promoting voter education, ensuring adherence to relevant rules and regulations, preventing electoral malpractices, providing essential services, and enhancing the overall electoral process,” Longpet said.

The call comes days after INEC announced that the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise had recorded 4.44 million online registrations and 509,929 physical registrations.
