A prominent figure of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi, has joined ongoing protests at the National Assembly in Abuja against the Senate’s rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
On Monday morning, protesters, including Nigerian youths and pro-democracy activists, gathered at the National Assembly entrance under the banner “Occupy National Assembly,” demanding that lawmakers reconsider the e-transmission clause of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
Speaking at the protest ground, Obi urged the Senate to allow elections to proceed without restrictions, saying, “Allow the election to go through the normal process. Whatever the outcome is, we will accept it. Why introduce confusion after the process?”
The demonstration drew a heavy security presence, with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps monitoring the situation closely.
Protesters insist that electronic transmission is crucial for transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. As of the latest reports, the protest remained peaceful, with security operatives ensuring order.
