Plateau APC Leaders Reject Governor Mutfwang’s Defection Rumours

Date:

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State have dismissed any potential defection by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting they would not accept him into their fold.

The rejection came during the party’s stakeholders’ meeting held at Crest Hotel in Jos on Friday, where executives and members resolved to oppose any move by the governor to join the APC.

Governor Mutfwang has repeatedly denied rumours of plans to defect, affirming his commitment to the PDP until the next general elections. However, recent defections by his counterparts — Enugu’s Peter Mbah and Bayelsa’s Douye Diri — to the APC have fuelled speculation that other PDP governors may follow suit.

Presiding over the Plateau meeting, APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda called on former Deputy National Secretary Barrister Festus Fuanter to move a motion rejecting Mutfwang’s alleged defection. The motion was unanimously adopted through a voice vote.

Fuanter said, “We don’t want anybody coming to our party. We are ready to win the 2027 elections on our own. The APC is a winning team with members from all zones in the state.”

Mutfwang’s Camp Denies Defection Allegations

Reacting, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, said the governor has no intention of joining the APC, adding that Mutfwang enjoys massive support from Plateau citizens.

“To whom did the governor attempt to join the APC? The people of Plateau are with him because he has restored confidence and good governance. His political path is guided by God and the people,” Bere said.

Similarly, PDP Southern Zonal Chairman Hon. Simon Domle dismissed the APC’s claims, describing them as “baseless and laughable.” He said, “Governor Mutfwang has never attempted to defect. APC is like a vehicle with a flat tyre — it’s not going anywhere.”
