A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, Brigadier General John Sura (Rtd), has officially resigned from the party, deepening the wave of defections that has continued to weaken the PDP in the state.
Gen. Sura, who contested the PDP governorship primaries in 2023 but lost to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, announced his resignation in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
In the statement addressed to his supporters under the banners of Sura Club and Liberation Family, the retired general described his exit as a moral decision. He said it was important to inform his political base directly, having carried them along since his entry into active politics.
“It has become imperative that I address you directly as my compatriots because you have been with me since the early days when I joined politics and ran for the 2023 gubernatorial elections till today,” Sura wrote.
“You might have heard the news of my resignation from the PDP. I owe you a moral duty to address you directly, although I have discussed this issue with some of you personally, I thought you should be the first to know formally. I will arrange and fix a date to invite you as a Political Family to discuss further on the reasons that necessitated my resignation and a collective resolution be taken,” he added.
The development comes at a time the PDP in Plateau is grappling with high-profile defections. Only last month, Chief Letep Dabang, former Director General of the Mutfwang/Piyo Campaign Organization, dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gen. Sura’s exit adds to the growing uncertainty within the PDP ahead of future elections, with observers warning that the party may continue to lose more key figures if internal issues remain unresolved.
