The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has confirmed the arrest of 13 suspects allegedly linked to a violent disruption of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress in Idanre that left two people dead.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the incident occurred on February 18 in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Akure, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-driven operation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.
Jimoh said the attack resulted in two deaths, injuries to three persons and destruction of property, prompting an immediate manhunt for those involved.
“Acting on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, operatives of the Idanre Police Division executed coordinated operations at strategic locations, culminating in the arrest of the suspects,” he said.
The spokesperson listed the suspects as 13 men aged between 25 and 55, adding that they are currently in custody and have made statements assisting ongoing investigations.
He noted that the command is working to determine the specific roles played by each suspect and to identify any additional collaborators.
Jimoh said the commissioner reaffirmed the command’s resolve to bring all those responsible to justice and expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his operational support.
The police warned individuals or groups against acts capable of disturbing public peace and urged residents of Idanre and the wider state to remain calm and provide useful information to aid investigations.
