The Lagos State Police Command has revealed fresh details on how 65-year-old Engr. Chibuike Azubike, who falsely presented himself as the “Obi of Lagos,” allegedly plotted a ₦1.5 billion palace unveiling scam.
Azubike was arrested alongside three accomplices after police halted an aborted installation ceremony in Amuwo Odofin last week.
Police spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, said the suspect admitted he was not a certified engineer as claimed but only a supplier of construction materials.
According to Oluseyi, investigations showed that Azubike had announced plans to unveil a prototype of a ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, on Saturday, September 13, 2025. Detectives said the event was a ploy to defraud dignitaries and unsuspecting members of the public.
Oluseyi stressed that Azubike acted without the backing of any legitimate traditional authority in Lagos and warned residents to disregard his claims and misleading social media publications.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, assured that all suspects would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded. He urged Lagosians to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to similar fraudulent schemes.
Jimoh reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting citizens from deception and maintaining public order across the state.
