Political Storm as APC, PDP Oppose Makinde’s ‘Operation Wetie’ Call

Date:

Seyi Makinde

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of inciting violence ahead of the 2027 elections over his “Operation Wetie” remark, describing the statement as reckless and a threat to national security.

Reacting to Makinde’s comments at an opposition summit in Ibadan, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said invoking a historical period associated with political violence was dangerous, warning that such rhetoric could fuel unrest and undermine democratic stability.

Makinde had raised concerns about alleged attempts to entrench one-party dominance, cautioning political actors to remember the “Wild Wild West,” a reference linked to the violent “Operation Wetie” era in the Western Region during the 1960s.

The APC also rejected opposition claims of a plot to impose one-party rule, arguing that the crises within opposition parties were self-inflicted and driven by poor leadership, internal divisions and personal ambitions among key actors.

The ruling party maintained it remains focused on governance and democratic consolidation, while calling on security agencies to take Makinde’s comments seriously and insisting Nigerians would reject what it described as opposition fear-mongering in 2027.
