Profiles of newly appointed UNILORIN DVCs

The Senate of the University of Ilorin has elected Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho of the Faculty of Agriculture and Prof. Suleiman Folorunsho Ambali of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, new Deputy Vice Chancellors of the institution.

ROYAL NEWS reports that their elections, in compliance with the University’s Miscellaneous Provision of Decree No. 25 of 1996, was a major highlight of the 292nd Meeting of the University Senate held last week Monday.

PROFESSOR ABAYOMI OMOTESHO

The new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Abayomi Omotesho was born on 28th May, 1959 and got his first, Master’s and doctoral degrees in Agricultural Economics in 1979, 1981 and 1991 respectively from the University of Ibadan.

He began his academic career at the University of Ilorin as an Assistant Lecturer in 1984 and he rose to become a Professor of Agricultural Economics in 2000 after displaying excellence in teaching, research and community service.

A member and Chairman of many University Committees, Prof. Omotesho has also served as the Director of Academic Planning, Dean of Agriculture and Dean of Students’ Affairs in the university.

In 2012, he attracted two tractors worth N10,000,000 to the University for students ‘academic and research training from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Prof. Omotesho who teaches in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Faculty of Agriculture, served as a Team Member of Presidential Visitation Panel to Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi State between April and June 2021.

He is a member of many professional bodies, including the International Farm Management Association, the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists, the Nigerian Rural Sociological Association, and Agricultural Economics Society, United Kingdom.

Apart from teaching thousands of students and supervising hundreds of first degree, second degree and Ph.D. projects for more than three decades now,

Prof. Omotesho, who is a Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Evaluators, is married and blessed with children.

PROFESSOR SULEIMAN AMBALI

The new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Suleiman Ambali, was born on 7th January,1968 and got his first degree (Veterinary Medicine), Master’s (Veterinary Toxicology) and doctoral (Veterinary Toxicology) degrees from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1992, 2004 and 2009 respectively.

He began his academic career at his alma mater, ABU, in 1996 before transferring his services to the University of Ilorin in 2011 when he was appointed Senior Lecturer.

He became a Professor a year later, in 2012 and had served the University in various capacities, including being a Dean of Veterinary Medicine, Chairman of the powerful Library and Publications Committee, as well as Chairman, Unilorin Zoo Management Board, among several others.

The new Deputy Vice Chancellor, who teaches in the Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, is a Fellow of Scholars Academic and Scientific Society.

He is also a member of many professional bodies including the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, African Society for Toxicological Sciences, International Brain Research Organization, among others.

He is a prolific researcher with over 100 publications in reputable national and international journals. He has served as an External Examiner to many universities, including University of Ibadan, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Anambra State University, Awka, amongst others.

Apart from teaching and supervising thousands of first degree, second degree and Ph.D. projects since he began his academic career, Prof. Ambali has numerous articles published in reputable national and international journals including book chapters.

A Fellow of the prestigious Society of Educational Administrators of Nigeria, Prof. Ambali has served as a member of various National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation and Veterinary Council of Nigeria Teams to many Nigerian universities.

Prof. Ambali, who is the Chairman of Ilorin Emirate Staff Association, University of Ilorin, is married and blessed with children.
