Saida, the mother of late Afrobeat singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has disclosed that her son died after battling a long-term illness known as “Ogu oru,” which frequently triggered seizures. The singer passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2025, sparking widespread speculation about the cause of his death.
Speaking in a viral video, Saida explained that Destiny Boy’s health condition had been carefully managed by the family with the support of hospitals, traditional healers and clerics, but was kept away from the public due to his rising fame. She said the illness had previously posed serious threats to his mental and physical well-being.
According to her, the singer collapsed shortly after attending activities related to his child’s naming ceremony, prompting his admission to multiple hospitals. She noted that a traditional ruler, Oba Edu Ifayomi, who was closely involved in Destiny Boy’s care, provided both spiritual support and financial assistance during his treatment.
Saida dismissed rumours linking her son’s death to money rituals, describing such claims as false and attention-seeking. She stressed that Destiny Boy remained active and hopeful until his final days, adding that he had interacted with fans and made plans for a performance shortly before his death.
The late singer, who gained national attention in 2019 for his Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song If, had recently welcomed his first child in November 2024. Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that investigations into his death are ongoing and that further details will be made public.
