Senate asks NiDCOM details of support from partners, int’l agencies

Senate Committee on Disapora has directed the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM to provide details of its budget of financial support received from partners and international agencies.
Vice-Chairman of the committee, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe (APC Kwara Central) gave the order when management of the commission, led by its Secretary, Mr Sule Yakubu appeared before the committee for defence of its 2022 budget.
Senator Oloriegbe, who commended the organisation for getting 100 per cent of its 2021 budget release, however, stressed the need to highlight its achievements, given the full release of fund.
According to the lawmaker, “there has been improvement, between last year and now, because, progressively, the organisation is receiving more fund.”
He also asked why the constituency projects listed in the commission’s budget was yet to be executed, given the execution of other projects in its 2021 budget.
Senator Oloriegbe further requested for a re-presentation of the budget due to non clarity of contents on pages 4 and 5 of the budget documents.
Responding, the secretary of NiDCOM said one of the critical projects embarked by the commission was the computer software application of creating portal for registration of Nigerians abroad to support development of the country.
Yakubu explained that the commission has been using an estimated figure of 17 million Nigerians in the diaspora and stressed the need for adequate data capturing of all Nigerians in the Diaspora.
