Senate Confirms Aminu Yusuf as NPC Chairman

Date:

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Dr. Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC). The Red Chamber also approved Kigbu Joseph Haruna of Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa of Yobe State as commissioners of the commission.

President Bola Tinubu had formally requested the Senate’s confirmation in a letter dated July 31, 2025, which was read on October 7 by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The confirmation followed the presentation of the report of the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, chaired by Senator Victor Umeh (LP, Anambra Central). Senator Umeh said the nominees were thoroughly screened and satisfactorily answered all questions.

“The nominees appeared before the committee for screening on October 14, 2025. The committee did not receive any criminal complaints against any of them. They are prepared for the jobs for which they were nominated,” he stated.

He added that the committee reviewed all necessary documents, including curricula vitae, code of conduct clearance certificates, police reports, and DSS clearance before the screening.

Following the committee’s presentation, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole, considered the report, and confirmed all the nominees.
