Senate receives Buhari’s request to confirm Appeal Court Ag. President

Senate has received a formal request from President Muhammadu Buhari for the confirmation of the Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.
 
The request was contained in a letter read on the floor during plenary on Tuesday by the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan. 
 
The letter from the President reads: “Pursuant to Section 238(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), I write to request for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Honourable Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria. 
 
“It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.” 
 
President Buhari’s action came after a former military governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), accused him in an open letter, of lopsided appointments, citing the delay in sending the name of Justice Dongban-Mensem to the Senate for confirmation as an instance.
The President had in a statement by one of his spokesmen, Garba Shehu on Monday, said the appointment of the Court of Appeal boss, followed her initial recommendation by the National Judicial Commission, NJC.
Justice Dongban-Mensem has been presiding over affairs of the appellate court in acting capacity since March 5 this year following the retirement of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa as the president.
Born on June 13, 1957, the acting president of the Court of Appeal, who is a daughter of Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem, hails from Shendam local government area of Plateau State.
Until her new appointment, she was the presiding justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division and a life member of the Body of Benchers.
