Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has strongly condemned the violent conduct of Kano Pillars supporters who invaded the pitch and attacked players, match officials, and staff of Shooting Stars Sports Club after Sundayās Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.
The chaos erupted moments after Shooting Stars forward, Adams Mustapha, scored a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser to end the game 1ā1, cancelling out Mustapha Jibrinās early strike for the hosts.
Footage from Propel Sportsā live broadcast showed enraged fans storming the pitch at full time, confronting referee Mohammed Tuta and his assistants ā Bem Japhet, Shehu Isah, and Alfa Sadiq ā forcing them to flee for safety.
Security operatives fired tear gas to disperse the angry crowd as order gradually returned to the stadium.
Reacting to the incident on Monday via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Senator Sani described the violence as āunacceptable and condemnable,ā lamenting the lack of security and poor crowd control at local league venues.
He wrote: āThe unruly behaviour of the Kano Pillars fans against the players of the Shooting Stars is unacceptable and condemnable.
āOne of the problems I found out when one goes to our stadiums to watch local league matches is the problem of thugs loitering around. Half of your attention is on the match and half on your safety and that of your vehicle.ā
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Premier Football League management has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
