Silver-Cross Hospitals and Foundation, Abuja, conducted a free medical screening for elderly residents at the Arts and Culture Complex, Area 10, to mark the 2025 World Alzheimer’s Day.
The initiative included the donation of special medications to 200 seniors and was carried out in partnership with NaidCARE, the National Orientation Agency, and the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN).
Dr. Patrick Ezie, CEO of Silver-Cross Hospitals, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the program aimed to strengthen healthcare delivery, promote Universal Health Coverage, and reach underserved communities.
“Not everyone can access hospital services, so we bring care directly to people. We provide consultations, health education, and palliative support to reduce burdens,” Ezie said.
The free screening covered eye, ear, dental, and general health consultations, targeting elderly residents aged 65 and above, a group particularly vulnerable to health challenges.
Ezie highlighted the low awareness of Alzheimer’s disease in Nigeria, explaining that it is a degenerative brain condition affecting memory and behaviour, often misinterpreted as witchcraft or spiritual problems, which can worsen stigma.
Eze Ajoku, National Coordinator of COSROPIN, called for special care units for the elderly, improved counselling services, and intensified advocacy to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and promote care for older persons.
Dr. Olubanjo Akerele of NaidCARE expressed satisfaction with the turnout and services provided, stressing that respect and care for the elderly remain a shared societal responsibility.
The event also featured health education materials, interactive sessions with caregivers, and public sensitisation on dementia-related conditions.
World Alzheimer’s Day, observed annually on September 21, seeks to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and challenge stigma associated with dementia.
