President Bola Tinubu has praised the Ogun State Government for successfully hosting a top-tier 22nd National Sports Festival, which concluded on Thursday with a vibrant closing ceremony at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.
Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu extended commendations to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the organizing team for delivering a seamless 12-day competition that showcased Nigeria’s sporting excellence and unity.
The closing ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and other federal and state officials.
“The energy, commitment, and unity displayed during this festival reflect the true spirit of Nigeria,” Tinubu stated. “To every athlete who participated, know that your journey has just begun. You have demonstrated excellence, unity, and promise.”
The president officially declared the festival closed, acknowledging Ogun’s role in delivering a globally admired event.
Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for the opportunity to host the games, noting the collective effort of the entire state.
“This success was only possible because Ogun State came together with a common goal,” he said. “To our athletes, you are all champions. You have not only competed, but you’ve inspired a nation.”
The Gateway Games 2024 drew over 10,000 athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and junior invited teams. Over nearly two weeks, they competed in multiple disciplines across various venues in the state.
Delta State emerged overall champions for a record ninth time — and their fifth consecutive win — cementing their dominance in Nigerian sports.
Enugu State was announced as the next host of the biennial event in 2026.
