The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Saturday turbaned 15 new traditional title holders and charged them to lead with honesty, accountability, and dedication to their people.
Speaking at the ceremony held at his palace in Sokoto, the Sultan, who is also President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, told the new chiefs to speak truth to power at all times, including to himself.
“Keep on telling us the truth all the time. Whenever we go astray, bring us back on track; it is part of your responsibility,” he said. “If you insist and we don’t retreat on whatever mission, we will explain our reason for not retreating.”
The Sultan stressed that the primary duty of the appointees is to serve their subjects faithfully, describing them as ambassadors of the Sultanate who must prioritize the welfare of the people.
The newly turbaned chiefs are:
1. Umaru S. Abubakar III – Sarkin Arewan Sokoto
2. Alhaji Haliru S. Abubakar III – Janjunan Sokoto
3. Alhaji Ya’u Aliyu – Dikkon Sokoto
4. Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman – Bunun Sokoto
5. Mu’azu Bello Maiwurno – Wakilin Ayukkan Daular Usmaniyyah
6. Ahmad Rufa’i Na Dange – Sarkin Tsabta
7. Alhaji Abdullahi Dan Azumi – Barayan Sarkin Musulmi
8. Bello Ibrahim Gusau – Sarkin Malammai
9. Abbas Abba Aminu – Sarkin Shariffai
10. Almustafa Mazuga – Mazugan Sarkin Musulmi
11. Ubangari – Zagin Sarkin Musulmi
12. Nura Umar – Dangaladiman Zagin Sarkin Musulmi
13. Alhaji Kabiru Maibulo – Sarkin Tamburra
14. Usman Abdullahi Mustafa – Muhtasibin Sokoto
15. Alhaji Shehu Zubairu Tela – Danmalikin Sokoto
The event was attended by the representative of the Sokoto State Governor, Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs Alhaji Ibrahim Dadi Adare; representatives of the Emirs of Gwandu and Argungu; senior councillors of the Sultanate Council; kingmakers; and other dignitaries.
