    LGs Poll: KWASIEC members visit INEC, seek support

    Chairman of the newly inaugurated Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, (KWASIEC), Mr Okanla Baba, has appealed for the support of the authority of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) in the state.

    The KWASIEC boss stated this during a courtesy visit to the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC) Malam Attahiru Madami, on Tuesday.

    ROYAL NEWS reports that Okanla Baba was accompanied by the entire members of KWASIEC.

    He said: “The essence of the visit was to thank the REC and solicit for the Commission’s assistance and cooperation to enable them discharge their duties deligently.”

    In his response, the INEC REC urged KWASIEC members to discharge their duty with all sense of integrity, honesty, dedication and Passion for the job.

    Madami further advised that they put in writing specific areas they need assistance for the commission to seek for approval from the National Headquarters.

    He therefore assured KWASIEC of the Commission’s readiness to give them necessary assistance.

    It would be recalled that with the inauguration of the KWASIEC by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, arrangements are on top gear for the conduct of Local Government elections in the state.

    INEC commences distribution of non-sensitive materials today

    Ahead of the kick-off of the 2023 general elections on Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) will commence distribution of non-sensitive materials to various locations across Kwara State on Thursday (today).

    The distribution exercise will be held at the premises of the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), Ilorin office by 8am, according to INEC’s contact person, Mr. Ibrahim Bolaji.

    Similarly, no fewer than 14 political parties on Wednesday signed Peace Accord at the state headquarters of INEC in Ilorin. ROYAL NEWS reports that the event was witnessed by representatives of security agencies, international and local election observers, as well as media practitioners.

    INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mallam Garba Attahiru Madami, described voluntary signing of the peace accord by the political parties as a good development even as he urged them to abide by the content of the document.

    He further assured all stakeholders of INEC’s readiness to deliver the best election in the state and the country in general.

    Also speaking, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG in charge of Zone 8, Adekunle Ashafa, thanked leadership of the political parties for their commitment towards ensuring peaceful conduct of the election.

    In his comment, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Odama, said that the security agencies would ensure adequate security before, during and after the elections.

    Also speaking, Kwara state coordinator, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Olusegun Adeyemi, urged residents of the state to reciprocate efforts of the INEC by playing their role in the democratic process.

    In his speech on behalf of the political parties, the Kwara state deputy chairman, Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Mr. Shina Ajisafe, said that the political parties would ensure strict adherence to the peace accord document signed at the event.

    Fourteen political parties among 17 political parties in Kwara state on Wednesday signed a peace accord document ahead of the forthcoming 2023 general election.

    African Action Congress, (AAC) Labour Party (LP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) did not field candidates and thus were absent at the event.

    Investigations have emerged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) may soon extend its operation to the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) in Kwara State over alleged financial misappropriation and embezzlement to the tune of over N 60 million.
    Findings by ROYAL NEWS revealed that the INEC KWARA Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society under the leadership of Mr. Gambo Suleiman Abubakar, was caught in a massive  financial discrepancies, fraud and misuse of members fund unduly.
    Other members of the immediate past executive council of the union are; Mr. Umar Sufian (Secretary) and Issa Dauda (Treasurer) among others.
    According to sources, “As the signatory to the society’s account, the three officers sideline other members of the executive and committees by investing society’s money in business without due process, purchase of highly overpriced property at Malete without due process and direct transfer of society’s money to their personal accounts.
    “As at the time of their suspension, about 10 months ago, Mr. Sufian has moved over N35m to his account, about N 10 million passed through Issa Dauda’s account. This really making life miserable and difficult for members who have the life-savings with the union while others are looking up to the money to cater for life after service (retirement period).
    The source further said that, “The Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC KWARA, Malam Garba  Attahiru Madami, actually set up two committees late last year, first committee is to probe and uncover the affairs of the past executive and the second committee is to stabilize the society.
    “The REC promised to address the cooperators and assured them that he would assist them recover their money from the management team. But it’s almost a year now and nothing tangible is going on. READ ALSO:SAD…. Another traditional ruler killed by gunmen
    “Some staff are of the opinion that the REC and the management staff of INEC KWARA are compromised already.”
    All efforts made to get the reaction of the former President of the Union, Mr. Gambo as at the time of filing this report proved abortive as several calls put across to his telephone number 08036093130 did not go through.
