Mourinho Stands by Vinicius, Issues Career Warning to Prestianni

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has warned midfielder Gianluca Prestianni that his career at the club could be over if he is found guilty of racially abusing Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. during their Champions League knockout tie in Lisbon on February 17.

Vinicius alleged that Prestianni made racist remarks towards him during the first leg of the fixture. The 20-year-old has strongly denied the accusations, but UEFA still imposed a ban on him for the second leg in Spain while the investigation continues.

Former Premier League Referee David Coote Faces Child Image Charge

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged with making an indecent image of a child, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed.

Coote, 43, was charged on August 12 and is currently on conditional bail. He is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The charge relates to activities such as downloading, sharing, or saving abusive images or videos of a child, authorities said. The alleged material was recovered by police in February.

Coote was sacked from his officiating role in December 2024 after a video surfaced showing him making derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp during a 2020 match.

In a separate incident, UEFA banned Coote from officiating until June 2026 after a video emerged of him allegedly snorting a white powder through a bank note while in Germany for Euro 2024.

The referee, who officiated in England’s top-flight league for several years, has faced public scrutiny over multiple controversies in recent times.

In a January interview, Coote publicly came out as gay and acknowledged that hiding his sexuality had contributed to some of his poor decisions.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about safeguarding and conduct within professional sports officiating.

Authorities have urged the public to allow the legal process to proceed without speculation, emphasizing that Coote remains innocent until proven guilty.

UEFA Ranks England Best League in Europe
UEFA has released its latest ranking of Europe’s top football leagues ahead of the 2025/26 season, with the English Premier League retaining its position at the summit.

According to the governing body’s official website, the rankings are calculated using the five-season club coefficient system, which measures the performance of clubs from each country in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. The results from the past five seasons are combined to determine the standings.

The Premier League sits in first place, reflecting the consistent success of English clubs in European competitions, including recent finals and title wins. Italy’s Serie A is ranked second, bolstered by strong performances from clubs like Inter Milan, Napoli, and Roma on the continental stage.

Spain’s LaLiga takes third place, followed closely by Germany’s Bundesliga in fourth, while France’s Ligue 1 rounds out the top five.

The Netherlands, Portugal, and Belgium occupy sixth to eighth positions, with Turkey and Czechia completing the top ten.

UEFA Super Cup final kicks off Wednesday night

The stage is set for Wednesday night as UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) face UEFA Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup final at Italy’s Bluenergy Stadium.

Both teams will battle to claim the title of Europe’s supreme club.

PSG secured the Champions League trophy last season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan, powered by goals from Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Senny Mayulu.

Tottenham claimed the Europa League crown after a narrow 1-0 win over Manchester United, courtesy of Brennan Johnson’s decisive strike.

Ahead of the clash, both squads have undergone changes since last season.

Tottenham have lost star forward Son Heung-min, who moved to MLS club Los Angeles FC this summer.

However, Spurs have reinforced their lineup with new signings including Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, João Palhinha, and Kevin Danso, aiming to steer manager Thomas Frank’s side to Super Cup glory.

Their recent form shows a mixed bag: one win, one loss, and three draws in their last five games against Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Luton Town, and Wycombe.

For PSG, this will be their first-ever UEFA Super Cup final.

The French giants also secured the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup last season.

Notable departures include Milan Škriniar and Ilyes Housni, who transferred to Fenerbahce and Le Havre respectively, while Lucas Chevalier joined the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 runner-up.

Since their recent defeat to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final last month, PSG have yet to play an official pre-season match.

Isa Saleh, co-founder of Borno Junior League, shared his thoughts on the upcoming final with DAILY POST.

He said, “The UEFA Super Cup final promises to be a tough encounter in Italy. Both teams had fantastic campaigns last season.

“PSG have not played pre-season friendlies due to their extended Club World Cup participation. Their last competitive match was the loss to Chelsea.

“Tottenham, meanwhile, have played several pre-season games with mixed results, including a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

“I expect a high-intensity, tightly contested match. PSG will be cautious facing an English side after their recent defeat to Chelsea.

“Tottenham could cause an upset — we saw surprises like Crystal Palace beating Liverpool in the Community Shield.”

When asked for his prediction, Saleh said, “2-1 to PSG, as they will be eager to learn from their last defeat.”

The UEFA Super Cup final kicks off at 8 p.m. Nigerian time on Wednesday.

Ugochukwu Completes Burnley Move From Chelsea

Chelsea FC on Wednesday confirmed two transfer updates involving Lesley Ugochukwu and Marc Guiu, as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.

In an official statement on their website, the Blues revealed that midfielder Ugochukwu has completed a permanent move to Premier League side Burnley, ending his two-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

Ugochukwu, who joined from Rennes in 2023, made 15 appearances in his debut season with Chelsea before spending the 2024/25 season on loan at Southampton.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old striker Marc Guiu has sealed a season-long loan move to Sunderland. The Spanish forward, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona, featured 16 times last season and netted six goals during the club’s UEFA Conference League-winning campaign.

Guiu also played a role in Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup victory, appearing in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, where the Blues were crowned champions.

This development follows Chelsea’s earlier transfer moves involving Mamadou Sarr and Leo Castledine, both of whom secured transfers last week.

Aris Star Perez Misses Match After Dog Bite

Spanish footballer Carles Perez has been hospitalised following a freak accident in which he sustained a dog bite to his genitals. The 27-year-old, currently on loan at Aris Thessaloniki from Celta Vigo, was reportedly trying to break up a fight involving his own dog when the incident occurred.

According to The Mirror, the forward was taken to a private hospital in Panorama, near Thessaloniki, where he received six stitches. Although the injury is not life-threatening, Perez remains under medical observation and may need surgery. His timeline for return to the pitch remains uncertain.

As a result, Perez has been ruled out of Aris Thessaloniki’s UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier against Araz-Naxçıvan PFK. The Greek side trails 2–1 from the first leg.

Aris manager Marinos Ouzounidis confirmed Perez had been set to start the match. “Carles would have been in the starting line-up. This incident happened but we can’t dwell on it. We’ve worked on alternative solutions,” he said. The coach stressed the need for players with character to step up in Perez’s absence.

Perez previously played for Barcelona, where he spent eight years before moving to Italy and then Spain. He now faces an extended period on the sidelines as he recovers.

Aina’s Career Took Off After Spurs Letdown

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has disclosed that he came close to signing for Tottenham Hotspur as a youngster but opted out due to the club’s poor handling of his proposed move. The Nottingham Forest full-back revealed that Spurs left him and his father waiting for nearly five hours without explanation, prompting them to walk away.

Speaking on the 90s Baby Show, Aina recalled how he had been training with the North London side and was told he would be signed on a specific day. However, when the time came, the club’s lack of communication changed the course of his career.

“I was at Spurs, training and training. They said they were going to sign me after a session,” Aina explained. “When we arrived, they told me and my dad to sit in an office. One hour, two hours, nearly five hours went by. I was already telling my dad I was hungry. Eventually, we just left. They never got back to us.”

Following the incident, Aina joined Chelsea’s academy in 2013, rising through the youth ranks but struggling to break into the first team. He went on loan to Hull City and Torino before securing a permanent move to the Italian club in 2019.

After further stints at Fulham and Torino, Aina moved to Nottingham Forest, where he has become a key figure. His performances last season earned him a nomination for the Premier League Team of the Season.

With Forest finishing seventh in the league, Aina is now set to make his UEFA Europa League debut next season. The club qualified after Crystal Palace, despite winning the FA Cup, were placed in the UEFA Conference League due to multi-club ownership rules.

Aina, 28, will be a central figure in Forest’s European campaign, marking another milestone in a career that once nearly started at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal Sign Olivia Smith in Record £1m Deal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Canada international Olivia Smith from Liverpool for a record £1 million, making her the most expensive player in the history of women’s football.

The 20-year-old forward, who made her senior international debut at age 15, has signed a four-year deal with the reigning UEFA Women’s Champions League winners.

Smith’s transfer surpasses the previous record set in January when Chelsea signed American defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for £900,000. The landmark move mirrors a historic milestone in men’s football, when Trevor Francis became the first £1 million male player in 1979.

“I’m honoured to join Arsenal,” Smith said. “It’s a dream come true to compete for major titles in England and across Europe, and I’m eager to get started with the team.”

Smith turned professional in 2023 and joined Liverpool from Sporting CP in Portugal for just over £200,000—a club record at the time. In her debut Women’s Super League season, she scored seven goals in 20 appearances, helping Liverpool finish seventh.

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers praised the Canadian forward, calling her an “exciting young player” capable of making a “big contribution” to the club’s ambitions.

Man United, Arsenal, four others punished by UEFA

UEFA have asked the six Premier League teams who tried to join the European Super League, to make a combined €15million (£13m) goodwill contribution to benefit children’s and grassroots football across Europe.

They will also see 5 per cent of UEFA competition revenues withheld for one season.

The six clubs – Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City – have signed a UEFA ‘club commitment declaration’ after backing down in their breakaway bid.

And they each face a €100million (£87m) fine if they ever attempt another coup.

AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid have also climbed down in committing to existing international and national club competitions.

An official UEFA statement read: “Those nine clubs acknowledge and accept that the Super League project was a mistake and apologise to fans, national associations, national leagues, fellow European clubs and UEFA.

“They have also recognised that the project would not have been authorised under UEFA Statutes and Regulations.”

However, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, have refused to renounce the Super League.

UEFA insists it will take “appropriate action” against the trio.
