Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 arrested 28 suspected internet fraudsters in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The arrests followed credible intelligence linking the suspects to cybercrime activities across the state capital. The suspects were picked at Tanke, University Road, Oshin, and Agbabiaka areas.
During the sting operation, seven exotic cars, including a latest model Toyota Corolla and a Lexus, two motorcycles, as well as expensive phones and laptops believed to be tools of the suspects’ illicit trade were recovered from them.
The suspects would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.
The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of eleven (11) cybercriminals to various jail terms.
The convicts are Olakunle Dave Edamisan, Samuel Opeyemi Enitan, Daniel Aanu Omoyajowo, Jonathan Emmanuel Opashi, Daramola Damilola Aliu, Olarenwaju Olamilekan Oluwaseun, Olaoluwa Daniel Adejobi, Akintola Akindeji Festus, Tijani Babatunde Adedayo, Sodiq Opyemi Odunewu and Powei Ibelih Theophillious.
The convicts were prosecuted following their arrest for alleged cybercrime and other related fraud activities
Upon their arraignments before Justices Ladiran Akintola and Adebukola Lajide of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Ibadan and Justice Sinmisola Adeniyi of the Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta, they all pleaded “guilty” to the one count separate charges filed against them.
Following their pleas, prosecution counsel, Olatunji Akintola, Umar Abiso, Shamsudeen Bashir, Adamu Sahabi, Zainab Tijani and Fatima Baba reviewed the facts of the cases and prayed the courts to convict and sentence the defendants as charged.
Consequently, Justice Adeniyi convicted and sentenced Odunewu, Adedayo, Festus, Adejobi and Oluwaseun to one-year imprisonment each without an option of fine.
Also, Justice Akintola convicted and sentenced Omoyajowo, Opashi and Aliu to one-year imprisonment each; Edamisan to six months community service, Enitan to three months community service while Powei was convicted and sentenced to six months community service. He will in addition, forfeit N500, 000.00 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) and N1.4million (One Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira) to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
However, Omoyajowo was given an option of N40, 000.00 (Forty Thousand Naira) fine while Opashi, Aliu and Edamisan were given an option of N50, 000.00 (Fifty Thousand Naira) fine each.
The convicts were ordered to restitute their various victims and forfeit all items recovered from them to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Police Command in Kwara has arrested 23-year-old Nigerian internet fraudster (Yahoo boy), Awoleye Oluwatofunmi, who allegedly defrauded an American national, Vonapolouis Moss, of US$ 1,000.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP. Paul Odama, disclosed this while parading the suspect before reporters at the police headquarters, Ilorin, on Friday.
He said the suspect presented himself to the victim as an American on TikTok, a social media platform with the name, Howard Adams, and defrauded her of US$ 1,000.
The CP said the suspect later took a step further by luring the victim to fly into Nigeria on January 9, 2023, through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
According to him, the victim flew into Ilorin the next day and was received by the suspect before he was arrested based on actionable intelligence.
The CP said that the suspect also deceitfully took an unspecified amount of dollars from the victim before she was rescued by police operatives.
He said further that the necessary authorities have been contacted for appropriate action.
Meanwhile, the rescued victim has been moved into secure custody by the State Police Command, pending her return to the US.
“The command would continue to discharge its duties with a full sense of responsibility and be willing at all times to respect the rights of every citizen,” the CP said. (NAN)
A 27-year-old suspected internet fraudster, also known as Yahoo boy, Obeta John, was on Tuesday, November 29, arrested by men of Ogun state Police Command for allegedly killing his girlfriend, one Idowu Buhari, an HND1 Mass Communication student of Gateway polytechnic Saapade.
The spokesperson of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect was picked up following a distress call received at Ode-Remo divisional headquarters, that one Obeta John, who resides at No 3, Mojubade compound, Eredu Ishara, locked his girlfriend inside his room and had started beating her, and hitting her head against the wall. All efforts made to persuade him to open the door proved abortive.
”Upon the distress call, the DPO Ode-remo division, CSP Fasogbon Olayemi quickly led his men to the scene where they met the victim in the pool of her blood after forcing the door opened.
The victim was quickly rushed to State Hospital Ishara,but was pronounced dead by doctor on duty. ”the statement reads
He said the suspect who is an indigene of Enugu state was promptly arrested and taken to custody.
”On interrogation, the suspect, Obeta John, informed the police that he is an internet fraudster, and that certain amount of money from one of his clients was paid into the account of his deceased girlfriend which she refused to relinquish to him.
He stated further that it was the argument over the said money that led to scuffle between them which eventually led to the death of the girl. ”the statement read
Abimbola added that the state Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested 30 suspected internet fraudsters in a sting operation at Kwara State University, KWASU, Malete.
The suspects were arrested following actionable intelligence on their alleged involvement in internet-related fraud activities. Part of the intelligence indicated that suspected internet fraudsters were operating in campuses around Ilorin metropolis to swindle unsuspecting victims of their hard-earned income.
Based on the intelligence, and weeks of surveillance, operatives of the Commission on September 19, 2021 executed a search warrant in hostels within the KWASU campus, where a number of arrests were made.
In the course of interrogation, those found not culpable were released to the Students Union Government, SUG, of the School, while the targets of the sting operation were brought to the Ilorin Zonal Command for further questioning.
Some of the items recovered from them include six exotic cars, several laptops, mobile phones and other incriminating documents.
The suspects will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded.
