Tinubu Wants No Opposition in Nigeria – Peter Obi Speaks Out

Date:

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused the government of President Bola Tinubu of suppressing opposition politics in Nigeria, warning that the country’s democratic space is shrinking ahead of future elections.

Obi made the allegation while speaking on ARISE PrimeTime, where he claimed that his party was denied access to major venues in Abuja for its planned national convention. He described the situation as evidence of growing restrictions on opposition activities and freedom of association.

He further alleged that there was a deliberate effort by the government to weaken opposition parties, arguing that such actions undermine constitutional rights. Despite the challenges, Obi insisted that the party’s convention would go ahead as planned.

The former governor also criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its handling of party leadership recognition, questioning its consistency and warning that Nigeria’s democratic institutions, including the judiciary, were being drawn into political disputes.

Obi called for a stronger and more united opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that Nigeria’s future should be shaped by competence and fairness rather than political interference. He also maintained that he would continue to oppose any system he considers unjust.
