Chelsea FC defender Tosin Adarabioyo has expressed his excitement during his maiden visit to Nigeria, where he unveiled the inaugural Tosin Adarabioyo Youth Cup, aimed at promoting grassroots football and empowering aspiring players across the country.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, Adarabioyo said he felt honoured to reconnect with his roots and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s football development. “It’s a great feeling to be in Nigeria. I’m hoping for a wonderful time with family while connecting with young footballers across the country,” he said.
The youth tournament, which featured four Lagos-based grassroots teams — Team Lagos, 36 Lions, Seamoriow, and Mavlon — was designed to identify raw talent and encourage discipline, hard work, and mentorship among young athletes. Team Lagos claimed the maiden title after defeating 36 Lions 1–0 in a closely contested final.
Adarabioyo described the competition as a deeply personal initiative born from his passion for youth empowerment through sport. He stressed that grassroots football is essential to national sporting success, serving as the foundation where future stars are discovered and nurtured.
“Football is no longer just a game. It’s a global industry that demands investment in infrastructure, marketing, and talent development,” he said, adding that early exposure and mentorship can help young Nigerians reach elite levels.
He noted that the Youth Cup will become an annual event, with future editions expected to expand nationwide. He also emphasized the importance of partnerships with local stakeholders to ensure the tournament’s sustainability and long-term impact.
Adarabioyo praised the participating teams for their sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork, urging them to remain committed to their development. He also pledged continued support for initiatives that promote youth development through sport.
His visit marks a significant step toward bridging the gap between Nigerian football professionals in the diaspora and domestic sports development.
