Trump Says His Morality, Not International Law, Limits Power

Date:

United States President Donald Trump said his presidential authority is constrained only by his personal sense of morality and not by international law, according to a wide‑ranging interview.

Trump made the comments as he defended recent aggressive policies abroad, including the U.S. military operation that ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and efforts to expand American influence.

Asked whether international law limits his actions, Trump said the question “depends on what your definition of international law is,” but added that he does not “need international law” to guide his decisions. “I’m not looking to hurt people,” he said.

The president said the only true check on his power is “my own morality, my own mind,” and that no external legal framework would stop him if he believes an action is right.

Trump also reiterated his interest in Greenland, saying “ownership” of territory is strategically and psychologically important, and distinguished that issue from treaty arrangements.

On relations with China, he expressed confidence that Chinese President Xi Jinping will not move against Taiwan while he remains in office, though he said such decisions are ultimately up to Xi.

The interview comes amid heightened tensions over U.S. foreign policy, including strained relations with European allies over Greenland and domestic unrest following a fatal police shooting in Minneapolis.

Trump’s remarks reflect a broader posture of prioritizing national interests and executive authority over multilateral legal frameworks, a stance that has drawn criticism from international legal experts who warn dismissing international norms can have far‑reaching consequences.

Observers have noted that statements undermining international law’s role may embolden other nations to act similarly, potentially affecting global stability.

The president also addressed arms control and indicated he is not committed to extending key treaties unless broader agreements are reached.
