UI Joins Nationwide ASUU Warning Strike, Campus Activities Suspended

Date:

The University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday joined the nationwide two-week warning strike, bringing all academic and administrative activities on campus to a standstill.

Newsmen reports that lecture halls and administrative offices were locked, while student and vehicle movements on campus declined sharply as the strike directive took effect. Most students, having been informed in advance, stayed indoors, adjusting to the sudden halt in university operations.

Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, chairman of the UI ASUU chapter, confirmed that the strike began at midnight on Sunday and will continue until further notice from the union’s national secretariat. “There is full compliance with the directive from our national body. The warning strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will continue until we receive further instructions from the union,” he told Vanguard.

He further explained that the chapter’s monitoring teams were visiting faculties and departments to ensure total adherence to the strike order. “No academic or related activity is taking place on the campus at the moment,” Afolabi added.

The nationwide strike was declared on Sunday by ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing at the University of Abuja. The union cited the Federal Government’s failure to meet its longstanding demands as the reason for the action.

“It goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on 28th September 2025. Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th of October 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive, as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” Piwuna stated.

The strike affects all public universities across Nigeria, underscoring ongoing tensions between the Federal Government and university lecturers over issues including unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and sustainable funding for public higher institutions. Students and staff are expected to remain on standby for updates as the strike continues.
