Unilorin DVC urges parents to fund education first

Date:

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola, has called on parents and guardians to make education a financial priority, stating that investing in a child’s education yields more lasting value than material wealth.

Prof. Bakare-Odunola made the appeal during the 2024/2025 End of Session Ceremony of the University School on Thursday, July 24, 2025. She emphasized that education is foundational to success in life and urged parents to view school expenses as essential investments.

“Education is life. Nothing can be achieved without it,” she stated. “It pays more to save for your child’s education than to build mansions. Any money spent on education is never wasted.”

She congratulated the graduating pupils, describing the event as a once-in-a-lifetime achievement, and cautioned parents against gender-based discrimination. She also stressed the importance of timely fee payments to avoid psychological stress for affected students.

Also speaking, the Director of the Institute of Education, University of Ilorin, Prof. A. A. Yusuf—represented by Dr. Ridwanullahi Kolapo Oniye—advised the pupils to prepare for the more demanding stage of secondary education.

“You are stepping into the real world,” he said, urging them to remain focused, take their studies seriously, and avoid negative influences. He also advised parents to monitor their children’s friendships and digital habits, while encouraging quality family time for guidance and support.

In her remarks, Pastor (Mrs.) Seyi Aboyeji, represented by Mrs. Moyinoluwa Julianah Owolabi, commended the teachers for their commitment and encouraged them to continue nurturing the pupils with dedication. She urged the school management to sustain its commendable pace of development.

Earlier in his address, the Head Teacher of the University School, Mr. Mas’ud Ibrahim Salihu, highlighted recent milestones, including infrastructural improvements and commendable performances in academic and extracurricular competitions. He acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as staff shortages and the need for solar-powered lighting on campus.

Mr. Salihu appealed to parents for timely fee payment and expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and the University’s leadership for their continued support.

The ceremony featured cultural performances, prize presentations to outstanding pupils, and donation activities. Notable attendees included the University Bursar, Mr. Abiodun Lawal; Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Mr. Naheem Falowo; and the Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Mr. S. H. Ibrahim, represented by the union’s Secretary, Mr. Alata, alongside parents and well-wishers.
