Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, OON, has died at the age of 68. The renowned academic and administrator passed away in the early hours of Saturday, June 6, 2026, and was buried later the same day in accordance with Islamic rites.
Professor Ambali served as the ninth Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin from 2012 to 2017 and was, until his death, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete. Family sources said he was hale and hearty on Friday before his sudden passing.
The University of Ilorin, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, described the late academic as an exemplary and humble leader who served the institution with dedication and distinction. The university declared a seven-day mourning period in his honour, with flags to fly at half-mast and prayers to be offered for the deceased.
Tributes also poured in from prominent figures including former UNILORIN Vice Chancellor and JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union. They described Ambali as a distinguished scholar, accomplished administrator, and respected community leader whose contributions to education and national development would remain enduring.
Professor Ambali was widely credited with sustaining and improving the legacy of academic excellence at the University of Ilorin during his five-year tenure. Known for his calm leadership style and commitment to innovation, he oversaw several landmark achievements in teaching, research, and community service, earning recognition as one of the institution’s most impactful administrators.
