The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has called on media stakeholders to promote responsible self-regulation of new media platforms, warning that the absence of clear standards has heightened the spread of misinformation and reputational harm. He made the call on Monday, February 2, 2026, while receiving the executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, during a courtesy visit.
Prof. Egbewole noted that while digital platforms have improved access to information, they have also made it easier for unverified reports to circulate without regard for accuracy or consequences. He stressed that public interest is best served when information is both timely and credible, urging journalists to balance speed with responsibility.
The Vice-Chancellor proposed the creation of a structured forum bringing together traditional and online media practitioners to develop acceptable reporting standards. He observed that although professional bodies such as the NUJ and the Guild of Editors exist, there is no dedicated mechanism to guide or monitor online media practices.
Responding, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Biola Azeez, reaffirmed the Chapel’s commitment to supporting the University’s growth, describing the institution as a national asset. He praised the Vice-Chancellor for recognising the media as key partners in development and said the longstanding relationship between the University and the Chapel has strengthened trust and cooperation.
