UPDATED: Emir of Ilorin organises special prayer for ex-Gambia Supreme Court Justice, Ahmad Belgore April 17.

The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Mai-Martaba Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari CFR will on Monday 17th April 2023 organise a special prayer in honour of Hon. Justice Ahmad Olarewaju Belgore on his attainment of retirement age of 70 as a Justice of Court of Appeal, (JCA).

Born on 18th April 1953, the highly respected jurist would finally take a bow from active service on Tuesday 18th April 2023 when he would clock 70years with outstanding services to Nigerian government, international community and humanity at large.

Also the annual Ramadan Lecture (Tafsir) will end at the Emir’s Palace on Tuesday 18th April 2023.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Emir’s spokesman, Mallam Abdulazeez Arowona, on Friday stressing that Hon. Justice Ahmad Olarewaju Belgore has served the nation meritoriously as a worthy ambassador of Ilorin Emirate.

According to the statement, “His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari CFR has approved that a special prayer in honour of the jurist’s retirement be scheduled for Monday 17th April 2023 at the Madrasatul Sheikh Alimi inside Emir’s Palace, Ilorin.

“The special prayer and closing ceremony of the Tafsir would be led by the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Dr. Muhammad Bashir Imam-Soliu OON to be assisted by other clerics in the Emirate while all traditional chiefs are expected to grace the spiritual gatherings.”

Belgore studied Law at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he bagged LL.B. (Hons.) with Specialization in Islamic Law from 1975 to 1978, the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos (Barrister-At-Law (BL) 1978/79 Session and was enrolled at the Supreme Court of Nigeria as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in July, 1979.

Records revealed that the jurist was appointed as a Notary Public in 1987 and later served in various capacities such as Judge of the High Court of Justice, Kwara State from August, 1990 to 2006, Resident High Court Judge, Offa Judicial Division of Kwara State August, 1994 to September, 1999 as well as Chairman, Special Tribunal Miscellaneous Offences in Abuja.

He was also on secondment to the Judiciary of the Republic of the Gambia and appointed as Justice of Appeal, Gambia Court of Appeal and was later elevated to become that acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the Gambia, a position he held up to December 2005.

“Ahmad Belgore was appointed as Justice, Court of Appeal, Nigeria on 27th April, 2006 and Sworn-in on the 8th June, 2006 and was posted to become the Presiding Justice, Sharia Panel of the Court of Appeal in 2008 and by 2015, he was appointed as Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal and posted to Ekiti Division.

“Appointed Member, Body of Benchers of Nigeria, October, 2015. Appointed Life Bencher, February, 2021”, the statement added.
