Uhuru Kenyatta and running mate Ruto: their prayers answered

With 85 per cent of ballots counted in the Kenya presidential election held Tuesday, incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta has widened his lead over his main challenger,Raila Odinga.

Kenyatta now has 7092508 votes, ahead of Odinga with 5721889 votes. With the tally so far, Kenyatta has polled 54.89 per cent, while Odinga trails with 44. 28 per cent.

Since the commission began publishing the results, Kenyatta has maintained the 10 percentage lead, contrary to pre-poll predictions that the two candidates were heading for a photo-finish.

Meanwhile, the NASA coalition, which Odinga leads has slammed the results being streamed by the electoral commission as illegal. In a statement, the group said the results are not not supported by any evidence of the tally of votes.

It said its representatives had met the commission on the ‘sham’ results being declared, but the commission has not stopped the tallying.
