Veteran Yoruba Actor Baba Gebu Dies After Brief Illness

Date:

Veteran Nigerian actor Oyewole Olowomojuore, popularly known as Baba Gebu, has died.

The news of his passing was announced on Wednesday by Nollywood actor and producer Kunle Afod through his verified Instagram page.

Afod revealed that Baba Gebu died on Tuesday after a brief illness, describing him as “a great legend” whose contributions to the Nigerian film industry will be deeply missed.

“It saddens my heart as I announce the passing away of our great legend, a great actor who passed away this evening after a brief illness… BABA GEBU, may your soul rest in peace,” Afod wrote.

Baba Gebu was widely celebrated for his decades-long career in the Yoruba-language film industry, where he appeared in numerous productions and mentored a generation of younger actors.

In 2024, the veteran actor publicly spoke about the loss of his wife, saying that returning to acting helped him cope with grief and avoid depression.

During that period, several colleagues, including Afod, offered him support as he resumed his career and continued to inspire others in the industry.

Details about his burial arrangements have not yet been announced.
