Why I Said ‘Dogs Are Barking’ During Rivers Crisis — Fubara

Date:

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has broken his silence on the impeachment proceedings against him, explaining that his controversial remark about “dogs barking” was misunderstood and rooted in his decision to remain calm amid political distractions.

Speaking during a church service to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Port Harcourt, Fubara urged residents to stay calm, saying his silence was deliberate and anchored on his faith in God. He assured the people that peace would prevail in the state despite the ongoing political tension.

The governor explained that his comment meant some critics were reacting without full understanding of the situation, stressing that he draws strength from God rather than public arguments or confrontations. He emphasized that maintaining peace in Rivers State remained his top priority.

Meanwhile, the crisis deepened as the Rivers State House of Assembly raised the alarm over alleged secret plots to illegally obtain court orders aimed at stopping the legislature from carrying out its constitutional duties. The Assembly warned those involved to desist, citing constitutional provisions that bar courts from interfering in impeachment proceedings.

On the same day, former Rivers governor and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, concluded his 17-day thank-you tour of the state, dismissed calls for his removal by President Bola Tinubu, and reiterated his commitment to mobilising political support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, insisting that politics is driven by interest, not sentiment.
