The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday monitored the ongoing Area Council elections in Abuja.
As part of the exercise, Wike visited a polling unit at Karu Chief’s Palace, where he interacted with ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
During the visit, the minister inquired about voter turnout and the general conduct of the exercise.
“But voters are turning up very well and there is no violence,” Wike told INEC officials at one of the polling units.
At another polling unit, he asked about the level of participation and the timing for vote counting. An INEC ad hoc staff member responded that turnout was low, estimating that only about 10 percent of registered voters had come out to vote.
The official added that counting of votes was scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The monitoring visit forms part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process across the FCT.
