2027: Advocacy Group Supports Southern Presidency

Date:

A political advocacy group, the Advocacy f Rotational Leadership (TAROL), has described the decision by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone their 2027 presidential tickets to the South as a positive step toward national cohesion.

Speaking at a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, TAROL’s National Coordinator, Prince Ene Okon, said the move would promote unity, fairness, and political stability in Nigeria’s diverse political landscape. He argued that rotational leadership remains critical to balancing interests among the country’s regions.

Okon called on other political parties to adopt similar zoning arrangements, stressing the need to institutionalise a consistent rotation of the presidency between the North and the South. According to him, such an approach would strengthen inclusiveness and reduce political tension.

“It is important that in rotating the presidency between the North and the South, all six geopolitical zones are given the opportunity to produce presidential candidates over time,” Okon said.

He added that future arrangements should reflect equity across regions, suggesting that the 2032 presidency be zoned to either the North Central or North East, noting that the North West has historically produced more national leaders.

Beyond the presidential level, Okon urged political parties to rotate key positions within states, particularly governorship tickets, among the three senatorial districts to foster a sense of belonging.

He expressed concern that in some states, governorship positions have remained concentrated in specific areas, sidelining other zones and undermining internal party democracy.
