Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor, has criticised Nigeria’s electoral process, describing elections in the country as “selections” rather than genuine democratic contests where votes determine outcomes.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oritsejafor argued that elections in Nigeria are neither free nor fair. He claimed that the electoral system is structured in a way that undermines the will of voters and creates predetermined outcomes.
The cleric expressed concern over the role of electoral institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that the system is designed to fail and that the votes of ordinary Nigerians often do not count.
Oritsejafor further claimed that political actors already know who will emerge victorious before elections are conducted, saying he is deeply troubled by what he described as a lack of transparency and credibility in the process.
When asked about President Bola Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 election, Oritsejafor said there appears to be a plan for his victory but added that he believes ultimate outcomes rest with God. He urged Nigerians to do their part while trusting in divine intervention.
