Human rights lawyer Aloy Ejimakor has criticised the Nigerian government over the remand of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, accusing authorities of applying double standards by prosecuting critics while negotiating with armed groups and terrorists.
In a statement posted on X, Ejimakor reacted to Sowore’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja. He argued that while Sowore has faced repeated arrests over his activism and comments on national issues, the government has shown a more conciliatory approach toward violent actors involved in insecurity across the country.
The criticism followed Sowore’s remand by Justice Mohammed Umar pending the hearing of an application challenging the revocation of his bail. Shortly after the court ruling, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) escorted Sowore from the court premises, an action that sparked protests from his supporters.
Supporters questioned the manner of Sowore’s removal, insisting it was inconsistent with the court’s remand order. The incident led to tension within the court complex, prompting heightened security measures as supporters demanded explanations from authorities.
Ejimakor’s comments add to growing criticism from rights advocates and activists over Sowore’s detention and prosecution. The lawyer maintained that the government should uphold democratic principles, respect freedom of expression and ensure equal application of the law in addressing both dissent and national security challenges.
