Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Timi Frank, has condemned the arrest and detention of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Services (DSS), describing it as a “national disgrace” and calling for his immediate and unconditional release.
Frank’s reaction followed a Federal High Court ruling that remanded Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail. Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter to June 24 after dismissing Sowore’s request for the judge to recuse himself over allegations of bias.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Frank alleged that Sowore’s arrest was politically motivated and part of a wider effort to intimidate opposition figures, journalists, civil society actors and critics of the government ahead of the 2027 general elections. He argued that the activist was merely exercising his constitutional right to freedom of expression.
Frank further accused security agencies of focusing on government critics while insecurity continues to threaten lives across the country. He questioned why outspoken citizens were being targeted instead of bandits and terrorists responsible for violent attacks in many parts of Nigeria.
The former APC spokesman also urged the judiciary to remain independent and called on the international community to monitor developments in Nigeria’s democratic space. He maintained that democracy thrives on free speech and accountability, insisting that security agencies should remain professional and non-partisan in carrying out their duties.
