How Oshiomhole Opposed Son’s Nomination as Edo Health Commissioner

…Appointment Based on Merit, Not Nepotism – Idahosa Defends Decision

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has disclosed that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole opposed the nomination of his son, Cyril, as the Commissioner for Health-designate.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had announced the appointment of Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole as the Commissioner for Health-designate last Tuesday in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

In an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, Idahosa praised Cyril as a seasoned medical professional with exceptional qualifications.

“Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a federal lawmaker, and his son, like any other citizen, has his destiny. Cyril is a highly competent medical doctor who studied in Nigeria and pursued further education in the United States. His appointment is purely on merit. The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from serving in a role he is capable of managing,” Idahosa said.

Refuting claims of nepotism, Idahosa revealed that Oshiomhole opposed his son’s nomination.

“This has nothing to do with Adams Oshiomhole. In fact, he was against the nomination. Governor Okpebholo’s decision was rooted in his vision for Edo State and Cyril’s competence, not family ties,” the deputy governor clarified.

Addressing comparisons with accusations of state capture made in national politics, Idahosa emphasized the integrity of the governor’s decision.

“What is happening in Edo State is far from state capture. It is about prioritizing competence and delivering for the people,” he stated.

On his own responsibilities, Idahosa noted that while he and the governor discuss cabinet matters, his primary statutory role remains as chairman of the state boundary commission.
