CAF unveils upgraded WAFCON trophy, prize money doubled

Date:

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to unveil a new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, just days before the 13th edition of the biennial tournament kicks off in Morocco on July 5.

CAF confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that the launch aligns with CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s vision to elevate women’s football across the continent. The unveiling will take place on CAF’s digital platforms, followed by a sponsor activation event in collaboration with TotalEnergies.

“This new trophy is part of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop Women’s Football in Africa,” the statement read.

The 2025 WAFCON will open with host nation Morocco facing Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. Reigning champions South Africa begin their title defense in Group C, where they will take on Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.

The tournament will also feature a significant increase in prize money, with the total pool raised from $975,000 in the 2022 edition to $2.4 million.

WAFCON, first established as a home-and-away qualifier in the early 1990s, became a full tournament in 1998 and has served as Africa’s qualification pathway to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. It was renamed the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2016.

Nigeria remains the most dominant force in the competition’s history, having won nine of the 12 tournaments and never finishing outside the top four. Equatorial Guinea won as hosts in 2008 and 2012, while South Africa secured their first title in 2022.

The 12 qualified nations have been split into three groups:

  • Group A: Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, DR Congo

  • Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Botswana

  • Group C: South Africa, Ghana, Mali, Tanzania

Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon remain the only non-winning nations to have reached the final of the tournament.
