The Kano State Government has blamed recent flooding in parts of the state on indiscriminate waste dumping and illegal constructions, warning that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, made the disclosure after inspecting flood-affected areas around Kurna and Baban Gwari Roundabout alongside the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Marwan Ahmad.
“Despite our administration’s ongoing desilting efforts, the recent heavy rainfall led to flooding in these areas,” Dr. Hashim said. “Our inspection revealed that the situation is being worsened by human activity.”
He described the findings as “alarming,” citing the indiscriminate dumping of waste into drainage channels by traders from Kofar Ruwa Market to Baban Gwari, as well as illegal structures obstructing water flow.
Excavation and desilting work has begun in Kurna to clear blocked waterways, he confirmed. Meanwhile, the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) has identified illegal buildings along Baban Gwari for demolition.
A comprehensive report on the situation and the government’s interventions is being compiled for presentation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Dr. Hashim warned that the government would no longer tolerate actions that put lives, property, and the environment at risk.
“This administration will take decisive steps against those dumping refuse recklessly or erecting illegal structures in sensitive areas,” he said.
He urged residents and traders, particularly in flood-prone zones, to adopt responsible environmental practices.
“Our priority is to protect the people and secure the environment,” he added.
