Niger Police Arrest Dozens Linked to Thuggery, Drug Offences and Clashes

Date:

The Niger State Police Command has arrested 30 individuals for alleged involvement in various criminal activities, including drug trafficking, possession of dangerous weapons, thuggery, and armed robbery, during coordinated raids across the state.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, the command disclosed that eight suspects were apprehended in the Gulu area of Lapai Local Government following credible intelligence on their involvement in illicit drug trade and abuse. Items recovered during the operation included suspected cannabis, cannabis seeds, alcohol, tobacco, amulets, and an assortment of weapons such as machetes, knives, sickles, and clubs.

In a separate operation in Minna, 22 more suspects were arrested in the Tunga area, following violent clashes between rival groups linked to illegal mining activities near the Kafintella-Samande axis on June 29, 2025. According to the statement, the swift intervention of the Divisional Police Officer in Tudun-Wada led to the arrest of a suspect, Salisu Kabiru, who later identified others connected to the unrest.

Further raids on July 5 and 6 yielded additional arrests and the recovery of four motorcycles, bladed weapons, and quantities of cannabis and other illegal drugs. All suspects are currently in custody, and police authorities have confirmed that prosecutions will follow upon the completion of investigations.

The police command reiterated its commitment to public safety and warned that criminal elements will face the full weight of the law.
