The University of Ilorin has been named first runner-up in the 2025 National Mega Award contest organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), reaffirming its reputation for academic excellence and institutional integrity.
The award ceremony, held on Tuesday, July 8, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, recognized Nigerian universities based on key performance indicators. UNILORIN earned a total of nine points across five assessment categories, securing second place and receiving a cash prize of ₦75 million.
Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, took the top position with 14 points and a prize of ₦500 million, while Nile University, Abuja, placed third with six points and received ₦25 million. UNILORIN had won the top prize in the previous edition of the awards.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, received the award on behalf of the university. Under his leadership, the institution has maintained high standards in teaching, research, and service delivery.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa praised UNILORIN for its consistent appeal to prospective students. “With over 49,000 applications, it’s clear the University of Ilorin is doing something right,” he said.
Minister of State for Education Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad also commended the university’s dedication to quality education. “The University of Ilorin has maintained a tradition of excellence. Though they placed second this year, their consistent performance is commendable,” she said.
Reacting to the award, Prof. Egbewole, through the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, expressed satisfaction with the university’s recognition. He attributed the achievement to the dedication and integrity of the university’s staff and emphasized the institution’s ongoing commitment to excellence in all areas of academic and administrative performance.
The award highlights UNILORIN’s continued leadership in Nigeria’s higher education landscape, reinforcing its status as one of the country’s most respected and sought-after institutions.
