Nigeria Electricity Generation Rises to 4,300MW

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu

The Federal Government says Nigeria’s electricity generation rose from 3,951 megawatts (MW) to 4,300MW between March 28 and April 10.

The update was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the Minister of Power on Strategic Communications, Bolaji Tunji.

Tunji said the improvement reflects earlier assurances by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that electricity supply would improve within two weeks following discussions at the Power Sector Working Group.

He attributed the increase largely to improved gas supply to thermal plants, which rose from about 605 million standard cubic feet per day to over 704 million within the period.

According to him, operational indicators also showed progress, with mechanical availability peaking at over 7,796MW, while operational availability increased to about 4,694MW, indicating improved efficiency in power generation.

He noted that although minor fluctuations were recorded, the overall trend pointed to gradual recovery driven by better gas supply and improved coordination in the sector.

Tunji said the government has inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee to address bottlenecks in gas supply, improve coordination among stakeholders, and enhance electricity reliability nationwide.

He added that the minister remains committed to sustaining the gains, stressing that ongoing reforms are expected to further improve power supply in the coming weeks.

He also called for the expansion of meter testing centres across the country and increased training for meter installers to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap.

Adelabu expressed confidence in the new leadership and said the agency would receive full cooperation from the ministry as it works to improve service delivery in the power sector.
