Ile-Ife to host first-ever road race

Date:

The ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun State, is set to host the inaugural edition of the Ife Road Race on September 25, coinciding with the annual Olojo Festival celebration.

The 5-kilometre race is designed to promote physical wellness, celebrate Yoruba heritage, and serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing young athletic talent across Nigeria.

The initiative, spearheaded by youth advocate Adeleke Odewade, has received the endorsement of the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. Speaking on the vision behind the event, Odewade said the race would not only discover raw talent but also provide a long-term support system.

“Our society lacks structured opportunities for discovering and grooming talents,” he said. “This race is not a one-off event. We are building a coaching and mentorship structure to support these athletes beyond race day.”

Organised in partnership with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative, the race is open to youths, amateurs, and professionals. All participants will receive certificates of participation, while winners in each category will be awarded cash prizes.

The race route is mapped to include several of Ile-Ife’s iconic cultural landmarks, offering participants and spectators a scenic view of the historic city.

Organisers are inviting corporate organisations, government agencies, and philanthropic individuals to support the initiative through sponsorship and collaboration. Registration is currently open on the official race platforms.
