Toronto, Canada – Extra Mile, a feature film produced by Five2 Media and Entertainment, has won the Best Film by a Female Filmmaker – Nollywood award at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF) 2025.
The production, led by Executive Producer Solate Ovundah-Akarolo and produced by Joy Grant alongside Ovundah-Akarolo, impressed judges with its emotional depth, strong performances, and innovative storytelling approach.
Starring Mercy Johnson, Jim Iyke, Lilian Esoro, and other Nollywood veterans, Extra Mile explores friendship, betrayal, and resilience in a way that resonates both locally and globally. Critics praised the film’s honesty and universal themes that extend beyond its star-studded cast.
Producer Joy Grant described the recognition as a breakthrough for women in Nollywood: “TINFF’s recognition is an encouragement for female voices in Nollywood to keep breaking boundaries and telling stories that matter.”
The award was received on behalf of Five2 Media and Entertainment by Canada-based communications lead Oraye St. Franklyn, who dedicated the honour to the entire cast and crew.
For Ovundah-Akarolo, the win represents more than just prestige—it signals Nollywood’s growing international visibility and the rising influence of female filmmakers.
“Nollywood has long been known for its prolific output,” she said, “but moments like this expand its global reach, opening doors to wider audiences, greater distribution, and new conversations.”
The TINFF gala, attended by stars from across the world including Nollywood comedians Ayo Makun (AY) and Julius Agwu, underscored the industry’s expanding presence on the world stage.
Extra Mile not only marks a milestone for Five2 Media and Entertainment but also serves as a testament to Nollywood’s evolution—where women’s voices are shaping, leading, and redefining the industry.
